Xeomin (1x100iu), Merz Pharma, leader in aesthetic medicine, has launched a new Botox called Xeomin, but what surprised it is not so much the effectiveness of the product as its testimonial. Gwyneth Paltrow, actress and founder of Goop announced her choice to become the testimonial of this new anti-wrinkle injectable filler on Instagram, creating so much havoc as she has always fought for natural beauty. Still, she stated that at least twice a year she usually get injections of this botulinum neurotoxin which, it seems, can give a truly natural effect.
Xeomin has been a drug on the market in the United States since 2011, but only recently has it taken hold especially among Hollywood stars and it is not difficult to understand why. What distinguishes this substance from the others is the fact that it does not contain stabilizing proteins, the main causes of allergic or otherwise adverse reactions to this type of injection. These side effects are noted especially in patients with very obvious food allergies.
The famous actress did not discover Xeomin alone, but thanks to the well-known Chicago plastic surgeon Julius Few: under her advice, to make the tired and aged look disappear and eradicate the many wrinkles that appeared on her face, she injected a micro-dose of the product and the result convinced her to lend her face for the advertising campaign. The actress also stated that she routinely treats the area between her eyebrows and forehead.
In addition to the aesthetic point of view, Xeomin is strongly indicated by doctors to treat the symptoms of blepharospasm and cervical dystonia, as well as the post-stroke spasticity of the upper limb that can occur with flexed wrist and closed fist in the adult.
Since the drug has several uses, both aesthetic and therapeutic, the recommended dose and the number of intramuscular injection points will be established by the qualified doctor for the purpose after an individual visit, in order to understand the severity of the pathology and study the treatment most suitable for specific needs. The product is to be used reconstituted and by intramuscular injections. As a rule, the maximum total dose recommended according to international standards is 400 units for each session. If therapy varies depending on the pathology, patients will find the onset of improvements as a rule after 4 days, up to a maximum of 4 weeks, and the average duration is up to 12 weeks. After this interval, a rest period is mandatory but not less than 12 weeks.
Like all medicines, this kind of Botox can also have side effects. Meanwhile, some subjects may develop hypersensitivity to botulinum type A neurotoxin or any of the excipients, severe myasthenia, Lambert-Eaton syndrome, and infections at the point of injection after a puncture. The product will first be reconstituted as per medical practice and injected using a syringe with a sterile needle in order to easily isolate individual muscles and avoid infections and overdose of the neurotoxin.
Before injection, the doctor will have to ascertain the patient’s anatomy to understand if there are alterations due to other treatments or surgeries and, with caution, will begin to operate, especially so as not to inject the product into a blood vessel that would cause intoxication with even fatal outcomes if no timely intervention is taken. Maximum attention is recommended in case you have to make injections near delicate areas such as the carotid artery, pulmonary quotes and the oesophagus. Xeomin (1x100iu)
